Recommended specifications for cardboard beds by the All-Section Union.
Cardboard bed recommended by the National Federation of Corrugated Cardboard Industry Associations.
The Great East Japan Earthquake highlighted health issues such as economy class syndrome due to prolonged shelter living. With the risk of death in the worst-case scenario being pointed out, cardboard simple beds have gained attention as a solution. In many cases at shelters, people continue to live in a state of sleeping on the floor, which can lead to reluctance to stand up, decreased walking function and increased risk of lower limb thrombosis due to inactivity, elevated blood pressure from insomnia, coughing and reduced respiratory function from inhaling dust from the floor, and mental and physical stress. Simple beds that are 35 cm high from the floor are effective not only for ease of standing up but also for dust prevention from the floor. The National Federation of Corrugated Container Manufacturers (Zen-Danren) is actively working to improve the shelter environment during disasters. In particular, they contribute to improving the living conditions of evacuees through the provision of cardboard beds. The Cabinet Office's "Shelter Management Guidelines" recommend the installation of simple beds such as cardboard beds as a measure to improve sleeping arrangements in shelters. Additionally, the Cabinet Office's materials suggest considering the use of not only cardboard beds but also easily reusable simple beds and air beds as options.
